Barnes Riverside - canvas print

When I painted this view of the elegant riverside in Barnes, I wanted to capture the distinct, leafy charm of this corner of South West London but look at it through a fresh, storybook lens. My goal was to step away from a purely traditional portrayal of the Thames and instead infuse the scene with a sense of joie de vivre, celebrating the waterfront with a playful and lighthearted touch. While I have affectionately detailed the eclectic, beautiful historic houses along the terrace - with their varied rooflines, grand windows, and climbing greenery- they are balanced by a much softer, imaginative energy.

The narrative shifts down into the foreground, where two of my signature boats float gracefully on the water. Rather than painting standard rowboats, I have stylised these vessels into bold, cheerful forms, turning them into friendly companions to the riverbank. By pairing the stately, heritage character of the London architecture with these imaginative boats and their colorful, shimmering reflections rippling across the Thames, I hope to lift the observer's spirits. It’s my way of capturing the peaceful optimism of a sunny afternoon stroll along the river, transforming a familiar city view into a happy, dreamlike sanctuary.
