This perspective of Barnes Riverside in South West London - featuring the historic Bulls Head and The Watermans Arms pubs - offered a wonderful opportunity to explore the unique architectural rhythm of the London riverside. My aim was to lean into the nostalgic charm of the Thames towpath while introducing an elements of playfulness that breaks away from a conventional, rigid landscape.
The composition anchors itself in the varied, characterful facades of the historic buildings, capturing everything from the ornate brickwork to the grand balconies of the central structure. This heritage backdrop creates a beautiful contrast with the foreground, where three of my signature boats drift on the tidal water. I have abstracted these vessels using clean lines and bold blocks of primary color, turning functional rivercraft into striking, stylized design pieces.
By mirroring the stately architecture with these whimsical boats and their soft, watercolor reflections, the painting strikes a balance between local history and cheerful imagination. It is a celebration of quiet, sunny afternoons spent along the river - recasting a beloved, familiar London view into a serene and lighthearted escape.
